Welcome back to the Monetizing Your Expertise Newsletter.
It is a pleasure to have you here as we continue our journey toward professional sovereignty. In our last discussion, we explored a pivot that many of you are currently considering: Breaking the "Lateral Leap" Career Trap. We talked about why moving from one company to another for a slightly higher salary is often just finding a new landlord for your brain.
Today, we are going even deeper. We are stripping away the labels. As the streets of Port of Spain filled with the vibrant colors of last Carnival Tuesday, it is the perfect time to talk about masks. Because in the corporate world, just like on the stage, we often find ourselves wearing a persona that isn't truly ours. We need to talk about Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume.
Your corporate title is a borrowed identity that can be repossessed in a ten-minute HR meeting, leaving you professionally naked if you haven’t built an estate of your own.
If you have spent fifteen or twenty years in the trenches of facilities, operations, or project management, or any other career, you have likely collected a lot of "badges." You’ve been the Manager, the Director, and perhaps the Vice President. You have probably spent years polishing your LinkedIn profile to make sure those titles shine.
But here is the fear that keeps most senior executives up at night: Who are you without the business card? If you took away the company logo and the fancy office, could you still command the same respect? Could you still generate the same revenue?
The uncomfortable truth in the Expertise Economy Future is that most of us are playing a role. We have mistaken the costume for the person. We have spent decades perfecting a role in someone else’s play, while our own script remains unwritten. This is exactly Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume.
The Day My Mask Slipped
I remember a specific season during my time in facilities management. I was a Facilities Coordinator, but on the ground, I was the general of a massive logistical war. I was tasked with the relocation and resettlement of nearly 400 workers for a major state agency. We weren't just moving desks; we were shifting lives across 13 different facility locations all over the country.
At the time, I wore my title like a suit of armor. I was the one with the master key, the spreadsheets, and the authority to tell 400 people where they would spend their next eight hours a day. When I walked onto a site, contractors stood up straighter. When I gave an order, things moved. I felt a deep sense of power and belonging. I had my "Coordinator" mask on tight, and I played the part of the essential executive perfectly.
But I’ll never forget the drive home after 10pm after the final worker and residents were settled in a rural location. As the adrenaline faded into the quiet of my car, a cold realization hit me. The authority I had felt all day didn't actually belong to me. It belonged to the agency badge clipped to my belt. It belonged to the "seat" I was sitting in at the office.
If I walked back into any of those 13 buildings the next morning without that badge, those 400 people wouldn’t look to me for direction. The contractors wouldn't answer my calls. I understood then, more deeply than ever, Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume. I was a highly skilled custodian of the organization’s power, but I owned none of my own. I was playing a role in their play, using my expertise to build their infrastructure while mine remained unbuilt.
This is the exact trap many of you are in right now. You are "Hidden Experts." You have the "dirt under your fingernails" wisdom from moving metaphorical mountains or literal agencies, for years. But because your identity is so tightly wrapped in that borrowed costume, you feel paralyzed. You fear that if you take off the title, you’ll lose your value. You’ve forgotten that the expertise is in the person, not the persona.
The Hidden Risk of Believing Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume
When professionals feel this identity crisis, they usually try to fix it with more "costuming." You might decide to go back to school for another degree. You think that adding "MBA" or a new certification to your name will finally make you secure. You tell yourself that another acronym will act as a shield against the volatility of the market.
Or, you chase a "Head of Department" role at a bigger firm. You tell yourself that the problem is the company, not the role. You believe that a bigger stage will make the costume feel more real. You think that by jumping to a more prestigious organization, you are somehow increasing your personal equity.
But these are temporary fixes. They don't solve the problem of dependency. Why? Because you are still playing by someone else's rules. You are still a tenant in someone else's building. No matter how fancy the title is, if you don't own the methodology, you don't own the asset. This is the core reason Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume; it is designed to serve the company's brand, not your legacy.
In the Expertise Economy Future, the market doesn't care about your title. It cares about your results. It cares about your proprietary system. If you are still relying on a "VP" tag to get doors to open, you are at the mercy of the person who gave you that tag. The second they take the badge back, the doors stay locked.

So, how do you stop playing a part and start owning the stage? My recommendation, and the methodology I teach at SME Digital, is a process I call Expertise Monetization.
We must move you from being an "Operator" to being an "Authority." This requires you to look past the job title and look at the "Earned Secrets" you have gathered over the last 20 years. These secrets are the real gold. They are the things you know that aren't in any manual. They are the lessons you learned while moving those 400 people across 13 sites while everything was going wrong.
When I founded my coaching practice, I had to take off my facilities hat. I had to ask myself: "What is the system I use to solve these problems?" I realized that my value wasn't in "managing desks." It was in my ability to architect complex transitions and build systems out of human chaos.
Once I named that system, I didn't need a job title anymore. I had a proprietary offer. I became the infrastructure. This is how you prove to yourself and the market Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume. You replace the borrowed title with an owned methodology. You stop being a person who "does a job" and start being a person who "owns a solution."
In a previous discussion on Why Your Safe Salary is Actually Risky, we talked about the financial danger of staying too long in a single paycheck. This identity trap is the psychological equivalent. If you stay in the costume too long, you eventually forget how to be the owner. You become so good at playing the role that you lose the muscle memory of entrepreneurship.
Conclusion
As we watch the festivities of Carnival culminate, remember that the costumes were packed away by (Ash) Wednesday morning. The glitter was swept from the streets, and the masqueraders returned to their desks.
The question for you is: When the corporate music stops for you, whether by your choice or by an unexpected restructuring, what will you have left? Will you have a trunk full of old costumes and a resume? Or will you have a Sovereign Platform that generates revenue on your own terms?
Understanding Why a New Job Title is Just a Costume is the first step toward freedom. It allows you to stop overthinking and start extracting your value. You have the wisdom. You have the "dirt under your fingernails" experience. Now, you just need the structure to turn that experience into an asset.
