Welcome back to the Entrepreneur Spark newsletter! In my last article, we looked at how to find and validate a successful business idea. It's an important step in beginning your entrepreneurial career, and this week, we'll delve deeper into a related challenge: turning your unique skills and passions into a viable business idea. If you've ever wondered how to bridge the gap between what you enjoy and what makes you money, this article is for you.
What if the key to your dream business is hidden in the abilities and passions you employ daily, but you don't know how to turn them into profit?
This fear prevents so many professionals from embarking on their entrepreneurial journey. You might be thinking, "How can I turn something I'm excellent at or enjoy into a viable business?" The truth is that many potential entrepreneurs become trapped here, and this is perfectly understandable.
The Problem: Lack of Clarity on Transforming Skills and Passions
Professionals and employees transitioning to entrepreneurship frequently encounter a unique challenge. Despite being highly talented or enthusiastic about specific topics, they fail to connect the dots and turn these into viable business proposals. With clarity, people risk falling into the trap of starting something they don't care about or following an idea with limited commercial potential.
When I launched SME Digital, I encountered a similar difficulty. After years of experience as an entrepreneur and in business operations and strategy, I realized I was equipped to assist others. But how could I turn this into a business successful and fulfilling?
Like many professionals, I began with many ideas. Should I provide consultation services? Create an online course. Write a book? Launch a podcast? The options were overwhelming, and I realized I had to reduce my attention.
Why Common Approaches Don’t Work
When confronted with this predicament, many people turn to well-meaning but erroneous counsel, such as:
"Simply follow your passion." This suggestion is naive and misleading. Passion is crucial, but only some passions have a sustainable market or economic potential.
"Find out what's trending and join in." While trends might drive ideas, they frequently result in saturated markets and severe rivalry, making it very difficult to distinguish your offerings.
"List all of your skills and choose one." This can leave you with a choice that you’re not excited about or connect with your objectives.
These tactics fail because they ignore the coming together of your abilities, interests, and market needs. Instead, they keep “wannabe” entrepreneurs guessing, resulting in frustration and wasted time.
My Proven Approach to Connecting the Dots
Here's the process I developed while building SME Digital, which I now use to help other professionals transition into entrepreneurship:
1. Reflect on Your Unique Skills and Passions
Begin by identifying the activities that excite you and the talents you excel in. For me, the answer was clear: I enjoyed assisting people in bringing their business ideas to reality. My entrepreneurial experience, operational expertise, and strategic thinking have continually prompted colleagues and peers to seek my help in starting and developing their businesses.
Ask yourself:
What do others frequently commend me for?
What are the difficulties that I like solving?
What do I naturally gravitate towards in my free time?
Reflecting on these considerations, I recognized I desired to ease the business startup process for others.
2. Explore Market Demand
Passion and skills are simply not enough. You must be certain that there is a market for what you intend to sell.
Here’s how I did it:
Search online communities: I looked into forums and social media groups where experts discussed their problems with launching their firms.
Survey your network: I contacted my peers and potential clients, asking about their main issues and which services they might find useful.
Analyze competitors: I researched existing business coaches and consultants to find holes in their offerings.
This study unearthed a strong desire for actionable, step-by-step help for transitioning professionals. Many people felt overwhelmed by generic counsel and desired specialized tactics for their specific situations.
3. Brainstorm Possible Business Models
Next, I looked into several ways of delivering value. I began with one-on-one coaching, which allowed me to offer individualized counsel. Over time, I expanded to write and publish my new book “Becoming An Entrepreneur”, then, a free online course, and now business plan consultations.
Here's how to brainstorm:
Provide services (such as consulting, coaching, and freelancing).
Create items (such as eBooks, courses, and templates).
Combine the two for increased impact.
Every model has its advantages. For me, merging services and digital and physical products resulted in a scalable and sustainable business model.
4. Validate Your Idea with Real Customers
Before completely committing, I tested my offering by providing free coaching and consultations to a small group of professionals exploring entrepreneurship. Their feedback was important in helping me improve my offerings, validate demand, and testimonials for marketing my new business.
You can do this, too.
Organize a modest pilot program or workshop.
Provide free or reduced services in return for testimonials.
Pre-sell your goods or services to measure customer interest.
This stage assures that you are serving genuine requirements while limiting the danger of devoting time and money to an untested concept.
5. Align Your Business with Your Vision
Finally, I ensured that my business aligned with my long-term objectives. I desired flexibility, financial stability, and the potential to have a significant impact on the regional entrepreneurship landscape. I founded a business I am enthusiastic about by creating services and products that meet these criteria.
Think about:
The lifestyle you desire to create.
The influence you wish to make.
The income level you need to reach
For me, this meant creating a mix of live and automated offerings, allowing me to balance work and personal life while scaling my impact.
